A good formula is not enough; it must remain genuinely stable throughout the product's life

In today's highly competitive skincare industry, having a standout formula alone is no longer enough. What earns a brand the trust of consumers, investors, and international partners is the assurance that the product maintains consistent quality and safety throughout its shelf life. "Stability Testing" is therefore a crucial step used to confirm that your skincare product can continuously maintain its original quality, whether in hot or cold climates or even under intense sunlight. Having these test results serves as proof of standards that reflects a brand's professionalism and helps build confidence among consumers and investors at every level.

Guidelines for sample preparation and sample quantity for testing

Stability testing should be planned from the formula development stage. In general, it is recommended to use at least 3 batches with the same ingredients and actual packaging as the products to be sold, so that the test results reflect actual production conditions as closely as possible. Each test condition should have enough samples for measurements at multiple time points, such as 0 months (baseline), 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months, including reserve samples for retesting if necessary. Results should be recorded in detail — including photographs, physical appearance, and chemical measurement values — to build a "stability profile" of the formula, which becomes an important database for improving future product versions.

The 6 standard conditions of stability testing

1. Room Temperature Storage

Simulates normal everyday storage conditions, such as keeping the product in a room or on a general shelf, at a temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius and relative humidity of around 60 percent. This test takes from 3 to 12 months to observe changes in color, scent, texture, pH, viscosity, and microbial contamination.

2. High Temperature Accelerated

Simulates storage in extreme heat, such as transport in a car parked in the sun or storage in a warehouse without air conditioning, at a temperature of about 40 degrees Celsius and relative humidity of 75 percent over a period of 6 months, to accelerate formula degradation and quickly assess changes.

3. Low Temperature Storage

Suitable for products that may need to be stored at low temperatures, such as certain serums or masks, tested at 4 degrees Celsius to check for crystallization or phase separation. Maintaining texture and the stability of active ingredients are key criteria in evaluating the results.

4. Temperature Cycling (or Freeze–Thaw)

Used to simulate temperature changes during transport, such as from a normal warehouse to a cold or hot area. In this test the product is stored at a high temperature of 45 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, then moved to a low temperature of 5 degrees Celsius for another 24 hours, counting as one cycle, repeated at least 3 to 6 cycles to assess the stability of the emulsion structure and the product's ability to return to its normal state.

5. Direct Sunlight Exposure

Uses natural sunlight or a Xenon Arc Lamp light simulator to mimic the UV–Visible radiation a product may face in real life. Suitable for products containing light-sensitive substances, such as vitamin C or certain plant extracts. The assessment observes changes in color, scent, and degradation of active ingredients over a period of 7 to 30 days.

6. Indoor Light Exposure

Uses LED or Xenon lamps with controlled light intensity to simulate light in a room or retail store. Suitable for products displayed on showcase shelves for long periods. This test helps determine whether a product is sensitive to indoor lighting and whether it can maintain the stability of its color, scent, and pH throughout the test period.

Parameters analyzed

Stability testing does not assess only external appearance; it also covers in-depth measurements across many dimensions — physical, chemical, and microbiological — to ensure the product maintains consistent quality. Passing criteria typically require pH to change by no more than ±0.5 units, viscosity to change by no more than 20 percent, and no phase separation or abnormal odor.

01

Physical appearance

Color, scent, texture, and phase separation of the product

02

pH value

Assesses acidity–alkalinity that affects the stability of the formula

03

Viscosity

Assesses the stability of the emulsion and the texture of the product

04

Active Content

Analyzed using HPLC or UV-Vis Spectrophotometer techniques

05

Microbial Limit Test

In accordance with the ISO 17516:2014 standard

06

Preservative Efficacy Test

In accordance with the ISO 11930 standard

07

Packaging Compatibility

Prevents absorption or discoloration of the packaging material

Parameters analyzed

The strategic benefits of testing for a skincare business

1

Increased credibility when presenting products

Data from the test report can be used to support FDA license applications, negotiations with investors, or participation in international trade exhibitions

2

Supporting marketing and logistics planning

Knowing how well a product can withstand temperature or light conditions helps the brand define appropriate distribution channels and packaging formats

3

Reducing the risk of product recalls

A product that has undergone complete testing reduces the chance of discoloration, odor, or degradation before expiry, which helps protect the brand's reputation over the long term

4

A database for future development

Data from testing can be analyzed for trends to improve formulas or create new products with even better stability

The strategic benefits of testing for a skincare business

A brand's confidence begins with provable stability

Stability testing under both accelerated and normal conditions, covering every environment a product may face, is a step that allows a brand to confidently confirm its quality to both consumers and investors. A brand that cares about product stability demonstrates responsibility toward consumers and the potential to expand into international markets. Investing in this testing is therefore not an expense but a true investment in "the brand's credibility."
