A great formula must be matched with the right packaging: test compatibility before going into production

In the Skincare industry, a product's success does not depend on a "good formula" alone, but also on the "compatibility of the formula with its packaging." Packaging does not only contain the product; it must also protect it, preserve its quality, and convey the brand image throughout the product's life. Packaging Compatibility Testing is therefore an important process that helps confirm your Skincare formula can coexist safely with its packaging — without degradation, without chemical reactions, and while fully retaining the efficacy of its active ingredients throughout its shelf life. At NATUREPROF, we specialize in scientific testing to confirm the quality and safety of health and beauty products, with a Packaging Compatibility Test service designed specifically for every type of Skincare, from serums, treatment creams, and lotions through to sunscreen, so you can be confident that the products you bring to market are maximally stable and reliable.

The importance of Packaging Compatibility in Skincare

The importance of Packaging Compatibility in Skincare

Most Skincare products contain active ingredients that are sensitive to temperature, light, and pH, such as vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, or natural extracts, which can react with packaging materials if not properly tested. Packaging Compatibility testing is therefore an important tool that helps reduce quality risks and post-sale complaints, as well as building confidence among partners, investors, and regulatory bodies such as the FDA or EU Cosmetic Regulation.

Color, scent, or viscosity changes

When stored for a long time in the packaging

Active ingredients absorbed or adsorbed

Onto the surface of the packaging material, reducing the concentration

Packaging material deformation

Cracking, swelling, or discoloration from contact with the product

Metals or chemicals migrating into the formula

From the packaging material, affecting the safety of the product

The principles of the Packaging Compatibility Test

The heart of the test is simulating the real storage and usage conditions of the product, assessing the changes in both the "formula" and the "packaging material" over time under various conditions such as high temperature, light, humidity, and temperature cycling. This test helps answer these key questions:

1. Chemical reaction with the packaging

Does the Skincare formula react chemically with the packaging?

2. Absorption or migration of substances

Is there absorption or migration of substances between the product and the packaging material?

3. Protective performance of the packaging

Does the packaging still effectively protect against light, air, and humidity?

4. Real-world use throughout the product's life

Is the actual use of the packaging still convenient and safe throughout the product's life?

Types of testing offered by NATUREPROF

01

Physical Compatibility Test

Assesses the visible changes in both the formula and the container — changes in color, scent, and texture; leakage, collapse, or cracking of the packaging; deformation of the pump head, tube, or dropper; and the buildup of cream around the cap or bottle mouth

02

Chemical Compatibility Test

Analyzes whether there is a reaction between the formula and the packaging material — measuring pH and viscosity, checking active ingredient content with HPLC, and testing the migration of substances from the packaging into the formula, such as heavy metals or substances from printing inks

03

Functional Test

Simulates real consumer use, such as pressing the pump head, repeatedly opening and closing the cap, squeezing the tube in hot or cold temperatures, and spraying at various angles and pressures

Test conditions and parameters

The test conditions used in the assessment

To ensure results reflect real conditions, NATUREPROF uses the following standard simulated conditions:

  • Room Temperature: 25 ± 2 °C / 60 ± 5% RH — 0–12 months
  • Accelerated Condition: 40 ± 2 °C / 75 ± 5% RH — 0–6 months
  • Low Temperature: 4 ± 2 °C — 0–6 months
  • Freeze–Thaw Cycle: alternating 5 °C ↔ 45 °C for 6 cycles or more
  • Light Exposure Test: Xenon Arc Lamp simulating sunlight and indoor light — 0–3 months

The main parameters measured

Covering physical, chemical, and microbiological assessment to confirm compatibility between the formula and the packaging

  • Appearance — color, scent, texture, phase separation
  • pH value — measured with a pH Meter
  • Viscosity — measured with a Viscometer
  • Leakage or cracking of the packaging — pressure and drop-impact testing
  • Migration Test — GC–MS to detect the migration of chemicals from the packaging material
  • Active Stability Test — HPLC to assess the retention of active ingredients
  • Microbial Limit Test — in accordance with the ISO 17516:2014 standard

The benefits a brand gains from Packaging Compatibility testing

1

Confirm quality and safety

Before launch, be confident that the formula and packaging work together safely

2

Reduce the risk of complaints

Reduce the chance of returns caused by degradation of the packaging or formula

3

Increase scientific credibility

Use test result data in marketing communications or FDA applications

4

Support export market expansion

Reports follow the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive and EU Regulation guidelines

5

Help select suitable packaging materials

Make decisions based on technical, cost, and brand-image considerations

NATUREPROF is an expert in testing the quality and safety of health and beauty products, especially in the Skincare category. We have a team of Chemists and Cosmetic Technologists who understand both Formulation and Packaging Technology, working closely to coordinate information between the client's R&D and packaging design teams. We view this testing not merely as "inspection" but as "Product Technology Management." The Packaging Compatibility Test is a crucial step that connects an effective Skincare formula with packaging that is safe and beautiful.

Result evaluation and pass criteria

Test results are evaluated against quality criteria. NATUREPROF's reports are prepared in the form of a Scientific Summary Report, with comparative photographs, change graphs, and technical recommendations.

Physical

  • No change in color, scent, or texture
  • No deformation or leakage of the packaging

Chemical

  • pH and viscosity change by no more than ±10% from the baseline value
  • Active ingredients remaining ≥ 90%

Microbiology

  • No pathogens found (P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, C. albicans)
  • TAMC/TYMC not exceeding the ISO 17516 criteria
